Divisions 1 and 2
- Anyone may enter roses, so long as they come from his/her own private outdoor garden.
- Multiple entries may be entered in each class, except where noted, provided that each entry is of a different variety.
Duplicate entries will be disqualified..
- Entry tags. The Show Committee will provide official ARS entry tags.
Both top and bottom sections of the tags must be completed, including the exhibitor's number.
- Uniform containers will be provided, except as noted.
- Wedges may be used to position a specimen but should not protrude above the container.
- Rose names and classification. Except where noted, entries must be properly listed in the current edition(s)
of either Modern Roses, Handbook for Selecting Roses (ARS Exhibition names are in bold type), the American Rose magazine,
International Registration Supplement, The Combined Rose List, or The American Rose Annual.
Classification by color and type shall be according to these publications.
A rose with two or more names must be entered under its ARS approved name.
- Novice classes are limited to exhibitors who have never won a blue ribbon in an ARS- accredited rose show.
Novices may also enter other show classes.
- Old Garden Rose - Any variety whose class existed prior to 1867. The variety itself may have been introduced
at any date. However, to be eligible for the Dowager Queen Award, the variety itself must have been in existence
before 1867. To be eligible for the Victorian Award, the variety must have been introduced in or after 1867 or
have an unknown introduction date. Side buds and sprays are permitted.
- Fully Open Roses must show stamens, which must be fresh. Excessive removal of central petals will be penalized.
- Except as noted, each entry should be at the exhibition stage (generally, 1/2 to 3/4 open, petals arranged symmetrically in an attractive circular outline tending toward a high center).
One-bloom-per-stem entries must be shown without side buds, except as noted.
- Sprays must have two or more blooms and are judged for overall form, individual floret
form, and to the extent possible for the variety, stages of bloom. (
See ARS Magazine, Dec. 1990, p22.) Side buds are permitted, except where noted.
- Climbers. Large-flowered climbers (LCL) must be entered in Class 14. All other roses with the word "Climbing" as part of their horticultural
classification must be entered in the same class as their respective bush counterparts.
- English Boxes.
ARS rules for these will be followed. Overall appearance will replace the points normally allotted to stems and foliage.
- All entries, except seedlings and sports, will become the property of the Show Committee. All roses except miniatures and minifloras shall be exhibited with at
least three inches of stem in the water unless noted in the show schedule. The Show Committee will remove wilted roses.
- No entry may be withdrawn or exchanged after it has been placed. Where possible, entries will be placed alphabetically by variety within each class. Only show committee members will be allowed in the Show area prior to its opening.
Entries in the Challenge Classes (Section Z) will be placed by the exhibitor, once placed these entries may NOT be moved.
- Standard Sweepstakes winner will be the exhibitor winning the greatest number of blue ribbons in classes open to standard roses (Classes 1 through 22 except class 2) Miniature/Miniflora Sweepstakes winner is determined similarly
(Classes 30 through 37 except class 32). Ties will be broken by counting reds and, if needed, yellow ribbons.
- Ribbons and certificates will remain on display until the close of the show. Awards will be dirstributed at 1:30 PM in the area of the head table. Exhibitors from out of town should arrange for someone else to pick up their trophies if they can not be at the awards’ presentation.
Ribbons and certificates will be mailed if requested, but not trophies.
- ARS-accredited judges, who may be assisted by ARS apprentice judges, shall do the judging.
Judges of this show and members of their immediate families can exhibit only in the Judges Class.
- Guidelines for Judging Roses, including any changes published in the ARS Magazine, will be used and include the following:
Point Scale: Form 25, Color 20, Substance 15, Size 10, Stem and Foliage 20. Balance and Proportion 10.
Stem length must be in pleasant relation to the size of the bloom. Roses with stems too long or too short are penalized.
Any specimen may have side growth, side buds, or spent blooms removed to improve appearance. This must be done skillfully to avoid penalty.
Special Note: Judges will disqualify entries for the following reasons:
| (1) Misnamed, mis-classed, unlabeled, or mis-labeled. |
| (2) Stem-on-stem, except for Old Garden Roses. |
| (3) Foreign substance applied to foliage, stem, or bloom to improve appearance. |
| (4) Side bud(s) on a specimen which must be shown disbudded. |
| (5) Violation of ARS rules or local show rules. |
| (6) Appearance of exhibitor's name in other than the designated place on the entry tag. |
- Ribbons may be awarded to each variety in a class, but only if merited.
Only blue ribbon winners are eligible for ARS or local society awards. The decisions of the judges are final.

General Rules and Regulation for Arrangements
- Competition is open to everyone. All arrangements are by advance registration only.

- Upon registration, the exhibitor will be responsible for filling that space or seeing that it is filled by a substitute.
- Each exhibitor is permitted only one entry in each class, but there is no limit to the number of classes an exhibitor may enter.
- Entries will be accepted from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2006. Judging will begin at 10:30 a.m.
All arrangements must be picked up at 5:00 p.m.
- Each entry must be the work of the exhibitor. Outdoor grown roses of high quality should be used in all arrangements,
but need not have been grown by the exhibitor. Roses must be correctly named on the entry tag in accordance with ARS rules.
- The rose must be the dominant flower in all arrangements. Other flowers and foliage may be used unless stated otherwise in the schedule.
Line material may include dry, tinted, or painted material. No artificial flowers or foliage permitted.
Fresh plant material may not be painted, treated, or dyed.
- Bases and accessories are allowed in all classes. Backdrops may be used, but cannot alter size of niche.
- Plants on the area or N.C. Conservation List and live creatures are not permitted as part of any entry.
- The use of the American flag is not permitted according to ARS rules.
- All entries are to be interpretive of the class title.
- The ARS Standard System of Awards will be used.
- Minimum points for first, second, and third are 90, 85, or 80 points respectively.
- High awards require a minimum score of 92. This should be evident in a noticeably higher quality.
- ARS Gold, Silver, and Bronze Certificates may be awarded in all arranger grown classes to the highest scoring
entries from the first place winners among the high awards. Certificates may be awarded to all classes.
- Entries competing for arranger grown certificates must write "A-G" (for arranger grown) on the entry tag.
- Decisions of the judges will be final. Judging will be in accordance with ARS rules for Judging Rose Arrangements.
Judges are requested to write comments on all arrangements
except blue ribbon arrangements and to note on the entry tag
those arrangements winning ARS Certificates or Awards.
- Only judges and clerks will be allowed in the arrangements' section during judging.
